Experienced coach Robert Matano is not relenting in his quest to win back to back league titles with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League side Tusker.
Matano who ensured a turbulent start to the season with his players coupled by continental assignments, has slowly gotten his side ticking again and they are in contention for a second consecutive league title.
Two weeks ago, the Brewers were ten points off the top spot which has been Kakamega Homeboyz’s for the longest part of the season, but have trimmed the gap to only six points.
While Homeboyz have dropped points by drawing their last two games, Tusker have managed to pick up maximum points, including their 2-1 controversial win over AFC Leopards last Sunday at Kasarani.
“It’s good and that is what we call competition and we are very happy that we are slowly reducing the gap at the top and that we are climbing steadily. It is pleasant to see that we have now managed to amass six points after winning two matches on the trot,” Matano said in an interview with Citizen Digital.
Despite the league only having seven games left to see off the season, Matano fondly known as ‘The Lion’ has vowed to take the league battle to the last day of the season.
Tusker have a date with Homeboyz on May 7 in Nairobi with the game dubbed a title decider, Matano keen to bag maximum points and leave the race wide open.
The former AFC Leopards head coach now wants his players to be consistent until the last day of the season if they are to stand a chance of winning a second consecutive league title.
“We must be at our best. For them (Homeboyz), let them do what they can while we do what we can and see how it ends,” Matano added.
