The Kenya Premier League governing body has lashed out at the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa for declaring the 2019/2020 season over and declaring Gor Mahia champions.
In a letter addressed to FKF, KPL protests the action by Mwendwa insiting it was a hastily taken decision.
“KPL wishes to state that it is strongly against annulling the league at this stage without first exploring other avenues, which will see the season played to the end,” the letter addressed to FKF CEO Barry Otieno reads in part.
In a tweet on Thurday, Mwendwa declared Gor Mahia champions as he termed the season as a concluded one due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Gor Mahia topped the KPL table with 54 points, seven ahead of second placed Kakamega Homeboyz when the league was suspended after the COVID-19 outbreak.
“…congratulations Gor Mahia! You are champions once again and you will represent Kenya on the champions league Next season. Lets do this,” Mwendwa said on Twitter.
Mwendwa also declared Nairobi City Stars and Bidco United promoted into the Kenya Premier League next season.
City Stars were leading with 64 points before the suspension of the National Super League (NSL) while Bidco came a distant second with 54 points.
“Nairobi city stars!! Welcome to the Premier League. Sasa changamkeni na ma signature moto moto (Now get ready by signing quality players),” Mwendwa said in another tweet.
