A total of KES 3.1 million was raised from the Mashemeji Derby played on Sunday at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani- by far the largest collection from a Kenya Premier League match this season.
Via their Twitter account, the hosts AFC Leopards who lost 1-0 to perennial rivals Gor Mahia announced that a total of 15,297 tickets were sold among them 266 VIP.
The figure is dwarfed by the collection from Tanzania’s Kariokor Derby that raised KES 25 million with fans filling the stadium to the bream on Sunday.
Yanga broke the jinx against Simba, downing them 1-0 courtesy of Ghanian star Bernard Morison’s strike in the penultimate stages of the opening half, a match that was also attended by Tanzania’s president John Pombe Magufuli.
Ingwe however says the collection could have been much higher had the government not ordered free entry to the fans that had crowded the gates.
President Uhuru Kenyatta attended his first Mashemeji Derby along with his new-found ‘brother’ Raila Odinga, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and some members of the cabinet among them Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed.
