Sony Sugar Company has formerly relinquished the ownership of former Kenyan Premier League champions Sony Sugar FC.

The 2006 champions have been acquired by former Shabana FC secretary Paul Mayieko, a doctor by profession.

The team has consequently renamed to Gusii FC and relocated to Kisii town from Awendo.

“We are happy that the acquisition process has finally been completed. It’s been a long journey but finally, we have our name, Gusii FC. It’s even easy to negotiate will potential sponsors because we now have an identity,” Andrew Ongwae, the club’s assistant coach and a former Gor Mahia player is quoted by Mozzart Sport.

The National Super League side has since acquired Former Sindo United coach Kassim Junior Otieno as the new head coach, with Ongwae who has been serving as interim coach since Juma Abdalla left for Western Stima in February resumes his role as the club’s assistant.

“Kassim is here with us. He is a very knowledgeable coach and I believe that together we will take the team forward,” Ogwae said.

The acquisition of the club by Mayieko is expected to end the financial turmoil that has bedeviled the club in recent years notably 2019 when it dished out three walkovers leading to its relegation from the top tier.
