On a night he was expected to save them, he literally did the opposite, dragged them into the mud, costing them beyond redemption.
This is the Spanish goalkeeping master in the name of David De Gea, the striker-cum-goalkeeper who guarded Atletico Madrid’s goal before his switch to Manchester a decade ago.
He missed the ultimate spot kick to condemn Manchester United to a painful defeat in the Europa League final in Gdansk, Poland.

Tears, despair and dejection.
Manchester United wrapped up the first half trailing 1-0, Gerard Moreno had gotten to the end of a Daniel Parejo delivery to hand Villarreal the lead in 29th minute and set them on course for their biggest night in football history.
After the break though, experienced goal sniffer Edison Cavani took just 10 minutes to restore parity, Scott McTominay recording an assist, as both teams rallied for a winning goal.
There was not much to be, all teams altering their on-field personnel with little or no success at all, end of regulation and extra time all 1-1 leaving French referee Clement Turpin with no option but to call for penalties that brought down the curtains on a long night at the Polsat Plus Arena.
All the first ten takers cooly converted their penalties, both goalkeepers David De Gea and his Villarreal counterpart Geronimo Rulli flying across the face of the goal without any signs of saving a single spot kick.
Then came the hour of reckoning.
All the ten outfield players had taken their penalties and now it was the turn for goalkeepers.
Rulli, coolly converted his and saved De Gea’s. De Gea missed, condemning the Manchester United faithful to tears and setting them up for trolls.
Villarreal head coach Unai Emery, who routed former club Arsenal on his way to victory, guides the club to a maiden Europa League triumph while extending his to fourth after three wins with Sevilla.
While Emery wins, Manchester United’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains at the wheel with nothing, but most importantly, United fans must trust the process or better else, process their trust.
