The County of Uasin Gishu in Rift Valley has become the first county in the North Rift Bloc to record a Covid 19 infections, the patient being among the new Kenyan who have tested positive.
This comes a day after four counties, Mandera, Machakos, Kisii and Kiambu recorded its first case yesterday, indicating likelihood of the disease spreading to any county.
Five patients out of the seven are from Nairobi County, one from Mombasa and the last from the North Rift Bloc county, summing the total infections confirmed to 179.
While addressing the nation on Wednesday afternoon, Health CAS Dr Mercy Mwangangi, said 305 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, reports indicating that the disease is becoming to spread in various parts of the country.
Dr Mwangangi also noted that among the 179 cases that has been confirmed, 3 are for those under the age of 15 years, 49 being between 15-29 years, those between 30-59 years are 114 as the remaining 13 patients are those above 60 years. This implies that the majorly affected people are those who are in the active productive bracket.
“When we look at the age distribution, this Coronavirus disease in actually affecting the more productive members of our society, you can see as I have said, only 13 are above 60”.
In a move to boost the health sector Dr Mwangangi has emphasized that the government is in the process of hiring 5 000 doctors as well as setting aside isolation centres for the medical stuff and health workers to protect them two.
Health CS Mutahi Kagwe while giving a brief at Afya House yesterday noted that infections are increasing daily hence the need to be conscious.
Uasin Gishu county joins the counties of Machakos, Kisii, Mandera and Kiambu for being the recent news areas to record its first cases.
