Tanzania has confirmed a record 196 new cases of coronavirus taking the country’s infection tally to 480.
The announcement by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa saw Tanzania overtake her neighbour Kenya which has now recorded 384 cases.
According to Majaliwa, the country has already registered 16 death from the novel virus.
The Premier also announced that Tanzania had registered a total of 167 recoveries from the initial figure of 48.
Of the new recoveries, Mainland Tanzania has 83 persons while Zanzibar has 36.
President John Pombe Magufuli’s administration has been criticized for percieved laxity in the fifght against coronavirus, allowing places of worship to opearte while terming the virus a devil that can never survive in the presnce of God.
The latest figures point to a nervy situation in Tanzania, as activists accuse authorities of covering up some deaths in order to protect the president’s controversial decisions.
