Long-serving National Police Spokesperson Charles Owino was on May 11 transferred to Kenya National Focal Point in Small Arms and Light Weapons as the deputy director of the facility in the latest changes by the Inspector General of National Police Hillary Mutyambai.

Owino, prior to his appointment as Spokesperson, was in charge of security at Kisumu County government and the latest changes see him deputize Charlton Murithi, the former Traffic Commandant who is the Director at Internal Affairs Unit.

The redeployment comes just months after Owino disclosed his political ambitions, hinting at a possible exit from the government to contest for the Siaya gubernatorial seat.

“You are aware that next year people will declare interest in various positions and as a person who has worked in government, I will have clocked 50 years which allows me to resign,” stated Owino in a past interview.

The changes have sparked mixed reactions from netizens, with some reading malice.

Many were of opinion that his transfer is due to his ambitions as the NPS always stands to protect its image away from any political affiliation.
