Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino was on Tuesday recognized for his efforts to offer online classes following the closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The leadership awards by Mizani Africa recognized Owinos’ efforts on digital platforms (Facebook and YouTube) to help candidates prepare for the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE); the lawmaker being labelled a champion for education.
Babu was also ranked the 6th best performing MP at the event held at Serena Hotel in Nairobi.

Babu’s online classes were however at the time termed an illegality by the Education PS Belio Kipsang who accused the MP of taking up a teacher’s role without proper training.
“Anybody who is offering to teach students without being qualified is undertaking an illegality, and so is anyone circulating e-learning information that is not approved by KICD,” Kipsang said on May 7, 2020.
