Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko will spend three nights in police cells after the court turned down an application to grant him bail.
Sonko’s legal counsel, led by Cecil Miller, sought an anticipatory bail for their client who was arrested on Friday following an order from the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji.
Apart from citing integrity issues against the Erhics and Anti-Corruption Commmison, the layers also argued that Sonko was not a flight risk.
However, through their Twitter account, EACC say, the governor was arrested in Voi while fleeing arrest.
“EACC confirms that Nairobi City County Governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi has been arrested while escaping arrest at a road block in Voi and is being transferred to Nairobi to face charges of corruption and economic crime,” a post on EACC’s account reads.
Sonko, through his communications team has denied the claims.
High Court Judge John Onyiengo has ordered Sonko to be held on police custody pending his bail ruling on Monday.
The Nairobi county boss is faced with graft charges.
The arrest comes days after police apprehended six suspects in connection to motorists attack
