A six-storey building on Friday morning collapsed in the densely populated Tassia Estate in Embakasi, Nairobi with several people feared trapped under the rubble.
The ordeal occurred moments after 8am with those who escaped unhurt saying the ground floor was first to sink as other floors followed.
The Kenya Red Cross Society, St John Ambulance, Nairobi County’s fire department, Kenya Police and the Kenya Defence Forces’ Disaster Response Unit (RDU) are some of those that were on the scene to spearhead rescue operations.
Speaking at the Public Works PS Gordon Kihalangwa said the block had 46 houses as police and KDF officers used sniffer dogs to locate the victims.
The collapsed building destroyed an adjacent single-storey iron shanty with several houses.
