One student died on the spot after the balcony of a bar collapsed in Chuka on Saturday morning.
 The 1am incident left 13 other students nursing injuries, with four in critical condition.
 The victim was a student at Kenyatta University and the survivors are all students at Chuka University.
 According to Meru South Deputy County Commissioner Albanas Ndiso, the students were drinking beer when the structure came down.
“One died and 13 are receiving treatment at the Chuka County Referral Hospital,” he said.
The owner of the Coco Lounge bar was taken into custody at Chuka Police Station awaiting arraignment on Monday.
Tharaka-Nithi County Physical Planning and Housing executive Jasper Nkanya said the government would not compromise standards in construction of buildings, ordering his officers to investigate and establish what caused the collapse of the balcony at the recently constructed building.
 According to a student by the name James Kamau, most of the injured were hit by debris.
