Drama ensued at Mamboleo junction on the Kakamega-Kisumu highway after traffic police officers opened fire at the detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday.
The detectives busted the officers who were manning the road taking bribes, and the later could not go down without a fight, in what culminated into a shootout.
One of the EACC officers is admitted at the Kisumu Hospital with bullet wounds while another, female, is nursing a leg she broke while fleeing the wild officers.
According to the EACC Deputy Regional Manager Aura Chibole said five officers were nabbed soliciting bribes from motorists but will be released on police bond pending a review of their files by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) before being arraigned in court.
Nyanza police boss Vincent Makhoha says the DCI ballistic experts are already probing the incident to identify who was behind the shooting adding that they will cooperate with EACC to keep up the fight against graft.
